Prepare Your Lights and Power and inspect Lights before use. Check all lights and cords for broken sockets, frayed wires, or loose connections. Choose the Right Lights:Use lights specifically rated for outdoor use (minimum of IP 44), preferably with LED technology for energy efficiency and safety. Use GFCI Outlets:Plug your outdoor lights into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet for protection against electrical shock. Limit Strands: Do not exceed recommended number of light strands connected end-to-end per outlet to prevent overloading the circuit. If in doubt call a professional.
Safely Install the Lights Use a Ladder Safely: Choose an appropriate ladder which allows you to reach gutters etc. Place your ladder on a level, stable surface and have another adult hold it for you. Attach Clips First:Attach light clips or gutter hooks to your light strands before securing them to your home. Use the Right Clips:Use plastic light clips or gutter hooks designed for your home's exterior, rather than nails or staples. Space Clips Appropriately:Place clips about 12 to 18 inches apart to keep the lights neat and evenly spaced. Work from the Plug:Start attaching your lights from the end of the string with the plug to keep it close to the outlet. Secure and Don't Overstretch: Securely attach each light strand to a single clip or hook to keep the lights taut but not stretched. Move the Ladder:Do not overstretch to reach further; instead, safely get down and move the ladder to a new, stable position.
